Takayama Hidden Gems Day Tour

In order to join this day tour, travelers are recommended to stay in the Takayama city area for the night before. The tour does NOT provide overnight accommodations but we are happy to help travelers book hotels or ryokans in the town center according to their budget.

Takayama is a city in the mountainous Hida area of Gifu Prefecture. Takayama retains a traditional touch until today, especially in its beautifully preserved old town. It ranks as a prime selection among travelers wishing to explore the true rural elements of traditional Japan. The city was put under direct control of the shogun and enjoyed prosperity given its remote mountain location. Takayama's old town has been beautifully preserved with many buildings and whole streets of houses dating back to the feudal ages, when the city thrived as a wealthy merchant town.

History and Cultural Walk

We will gather at the town area in the morning. The morning session is a history and cultural tour by guided walk through the old town, traditional houses, historical residences of Takayama gentries, shrines, and more. Through this tour, you will have a full understanding of Takayama and living in traditional Japan by seeing and listening to story-telling by the guide. Souvenir and snack shops along the town streets offer a great variety of cultural items.

Some houses in the old town are open for public visits. Looking behind the facade, you will see the former living quarters of the local merchants decorated by traditional household goods and local arts and crafts.

Rickshaw Ride

After the walking tour, we will arrange you for a Rickshaw ride through the old town area. This is an exciting experience not to be missed. The rickshaw puller is experienced and funny, making the whole journey interesting and amusing.

Specialty Food Lunch

We will guide you to the most iconic local food stalls and shops, such as the famous Hida beef sushi, grilled Hida skewers, manju, fish cake, etc. You will enjoy a diversity of local food items for lunch.
